TNAU Information and Training Centre, Chennai
1. Genesis:
Urban Horticulture Development Centre has been started in May 2000, with the prime objective to serve as an information centre for hi-tech horticulture technology and to impart training programmes on hi-tech horticulture to urban entrepreneurs, unemployed graduates, students, NGOs, corporates, house wives etc. The centre is renamed as “TNAU Information and Training Centre” with effect from 01-08-2011
2. Objectives:
- To impart training programmes on hi-tech horticulture and allied subjects to urban entrepreneurs, unemployed graduates, students, SHGs, NGO’s, corporate, house wives etc.
- To inculcate knowledge on development of Horti-ecological parks, avenues, greenery, theme parks, botanical gardens, herbal parks, landscaping etc., to reduce pollution and ecological hazards in the city.
- Formulation of Hi-tech Horticultural projects, providing technological assistance to new entrepreneurs for promoting the Horticulture industry.
- Provide training and consultancy on Roof garden, Kitchen gardening, Landscape gardening, Bonsai making, Indoor plants care and maintenance, Flower arrangement and Bouquet making, production of edible mushroom and Vermicomposting.
- Training on value addition on agro and horticulture products.
- Provide the kitchen garden vegetable seeds, vermicompost and saplings at low cost.
3. Current activities
a. Hi-tech nursery
Elite horticultural plant materials have been made available for sales through the
hi-tech nursery. Seeds of improved varieties of vegetables, flowers, spices, medicinal and aromatic plants are now being sold through the counter.
b. Plant Advisory Cell
Problems oriented in horticulture are now attended and solutions are offered.
c. Training
Monthly training schedule has been developed for imparting training in various subjects as listed.
4. Ongoing project:
“Venture Capital Scheme on Strengthening Commercial Horticulture Training Programme including Consultancy and Food Products”.

Training duration:
One day between 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Working lunch will be provided. Also,
refreshments, scribbling pads and pens will be given to the participants. On completion of the training, a certificate and manuals will be provided.
