1.Establishment
The Hybrid Rice Evaluation Centre was established in the year 1996. The station is located at Gudalur in Ooty – Mysore National Highway, Nilgiri District, Tamil Nadu, India. This centre is situated at an elevation of 1300 m MSL and between 11.5 N latitude and 76.5 E longitude. This centre occupies a total area of one hectare. The average rainfall is more than 2000 mm per year.
2.Mandates
- To develop TGMS lines in rice.
- To perpetuate the promising TGMS lines in rice.
- To develop two line hybrids in rice.
- To coordinate with the rice research and development activities with various rice research stations of TNAU and DRR, Hyderabad.
- To screen the rice genotypes for blast resistance.
3.Activities
In this centre mainly development and seed multiplication of Thermo Sensitive Genic Male Sterile (TGMS) lines are being carried out. The TGMS lines needs cool climate for seed setting ie., day temperature should be < 240 C and night temperature should be >180 C. This type of climate prevailed only in Gudalur of Nilgiri District in Tamil Nadu. Apart from this evaluation of AICRIP rice genotypes for hilly ecosystem and screening of rice genotypes (DRR and TNAU materials) against blast and brown spot are being carried out regularly.
3. Achievements
- This centre has so far developed eleven TGMS lines (GDR 1 S to GDR 11 S).
- Two line hybrids were developed by using the seed materials multiplied at HREC, Gudalur in Department of Rice, Coimbatore.
- Identified most virulent race causing blast disease in rice
