SUGARCANE RESEARCH STATION, SIRUGAMANI
1.ESTABLISHMENT The Sugarcane Research Station Sirugamani was originally started in the village Kumaramangalam in Kulithalai Taluk in an area of 2.4 ha. on 5.9.1957. Due to unprecedented floods for want of proper drainage facilities and also the alkaline nature of soil necessitated the change of site to a better place which was ultimately located at Sirugaani with effect from December 1959 with an area of 24.83 hectares. Private Scheme : BASF – Multi location testing seed multiplication and CMS maintenance in the exotic rice genotypes.
4. ACHIEVEMENTS: List of Varieties Released SUGARCANE: 1. CoSi 776 : This variety was released during 1977.This is a cross progeny of Co.419 and Co 775. It is a thick, erect and purplish green cane suitable to grow in mid late season. Average cane yield 120 t/ha and CCS 11% . It is drought tolerant,moderately resistant to top shoot borer and perform well under saline-alkali soil. 2.CoSi 86071 : This variety was released during 1986.It is cross derivative of Co 775 and Co 842.Medium thick yellowish purplish cane, suitable for mid late season.It can tolerate drought and late water logging. The average yield potential is 132 t/ha and CCS 12%.It is moderately resistant to red rot, smut and top shoot borer. 3. CoSi 95071 : This variety was released during 1995.The parents of this variety are CoC 671 and MS 6847. It is tall growing greenish cane with non lodging and non flowering characters.Suitable to grow in early season. It can withstand early drought and late waterlogging.Average cane yield 142 t/ha with 12% CCS. It is a good ratooner and moderately resistant to red rot. 4. CoSi 96071 : This variety was released during 1996.It is a general cross derivative of Co 82061.Suitable for early season and can produce cane yield of 147 t/ha with CCS percent of 11.9.Performs well under alkaline soil. 5. CoSi 98071 : This variety was released during 1998. It is a cross derivative of BO 91 and Co 67198.It is suitable to grow in mid late season and can produce an average yield of 144.7 t/ha with CCS % of 12.1.Moderately resistant red rot, smut and scales. 6. CoSi (Sc) 6 : This variety was released for general cultivation during 2005. It is a cross between Co.8213 and Co.A.7602.This variety can produce an average cane yield of 148 t/ha, CCS 12.3% and sugar yield of 18.1 t/ha. Moderately resistant to red rot and smut diseases.Suitable for mid late season, drought tolerant, withstands water logging and performs well in alkali soils. TNAU Sugarcane Si 7:

BETELVINE 1.SGM 1 : High yielder female vine (60-65 lakh leaves/ha/yr). Released during 1994.Pure line selection from Palghat local.Suitable for cultivation throughout Tamil Nadu.It excelled from other traditional cultivars Pachai kodi. Vellaikodi and Kapoori in leaf yield and growth habits. Fresh weight –225 g/100 leaves. Keeping quality 8-10 days. Tolerant to wilt disease. 2.SGM BV 2 : Released during 2004. Pure line selection from the Dindigul local. Resistant to linear scale insect and moderately resistant to red spider mite, Phytopthora wilt and nematodes.High yielder (48 lakh leaves /ha/year) compared to the traditional types (kapoori 42 lakh leaves, vellaikodi 31 lakh leaves, Pachai kodi 35 lakh leaves ) Contact Professor and Head Updated on Oct 2013 |
