TNAU Agritech Portal ::Traditional Fruit Varieties

Guava – Nattu Vellai (White) and Senkoiya (Red Flesh)
There are two types of guava varieties. Among these, one is white coloured and the other one is pink coloured. The main difference between the varieties released and the traditional varieties with reference to guava are;

  • Taste – traditional varieties are tastier than other varieties.
  • Skin – traditional varieties have a light skin when compared to other varieties which have a thick skin that makes it hard to eat.

Even within the traditional varieties, especially in red guava ther are two forms, one which has a pointed end with less taste and the other which is round shaped with good taste. One basket containing 10-25 kg of fruit. The cost of one basket is Rs.30-40/-.The reason for existence of such traditional guava variety still at kolli hills is because;

  • Government variety doesn’t suit to the climatic condition prevailing at kolli hills.
  • Even if a same tree bears fruit, due to the harder skin, it has less or no market preference. So obviously, it loses its position in cultivation.
