Varikkai Chakkai pala
The variety thrives well in deep rich alluvial and loamy soils prevailing in Kanyakumari district. It belongs to firm flesh group and the carpel’s are thick and tightly arranged. It is mainly used as a stable fruit. Jack is a popular fruit with the house wife for making pickles. In a year, the tree bears fruits in two seasons, viz. April-June and November – December. Normally it starts fruiting form 7th -8th year onwards. The yield ranges from 60-80 fruits/tree. The fruit weight varies from 12-18kg containing 115-120 flakes. Flakes are pale yellow in colour. The shelf life is more when compared to other varieties.
