Kadalikai – Traditional Groundnut
It is being cultivated in Velankadu village at Vellore district. Land is ploughed 3 – 4 times before sowing by using country plough or cultivator. Five tones of farm yard manure are applied as a basal. The suitable season for growing this groundnut is June-August (it is a rain fed crop). The duration of the crop is 90 days. 50 kg of seeds are required for one acre of land. Seeds are sown behind the country plough. 30th days after planting, 1st weeding 60th day second weeding and for each weeding 20 women labourers required. For harvesting groundnut, farmers are given only produce as wages @ 5: 1 90th days after planting, ground nut are ready for harvesting. For one acre of land 20-25 women’s labour is required /day. Yield is about 5000 kg/acre. One kg of ground nut is Rs.10/- the expenditure for cultivating groundnut per acre is Rs.5000/-
