Kannadi Katthari – Wild Brinjal
Kannadi Kathari is traditionally cultivated in Devoor village at Salem district. The nursery requirement for one acre of land is 1.5cents. The required seed rate is 200-300 grams. The nursery duration is 2 months. Seeds are collected from well ripened, pest and disease free fruits. Seeds are coated with ash and Dithane power to protect the seeds from stored pests. It can be stored up to 2-3 years. Cultivation starts during the month of August and January and duration of this crop is 6-7 months. This variety is mostly preferred in Erode market and has good market value while compared to other varieties. Cow dung, goat maure and  poultry waste were used as manures. Some times plant leaves are used as manure is field itself. This variety possesses high pest and disease resistant, so that farmers used to prefer to cultivate this variety. Plant height is 4-5 feet; high rainfall condition is not suitable for this crop is upto 30-40 bags in 3 months. The farmer can get a net profit of upto Rs.30,000-50,000. During harvesting period, intercropping is done by using “kottai pudalai’ (Snake gourd) seeds are sown in brinjal field. The snake gourd plant uses the wild brinjal plant as a support for its growth. The farmer generated the additional income of Rs.20,000/- for growing kottai pudalai as inter crop.
