Vazuthaalangai (Solanum melongena) – Egg Plant /Brinjal
It is another important tropical vegetable believed to be a native of India. It is being cultivated in Vettuvenni village of Marathandum Taluk at Kanyakumari district. Local preference varies considerably from region to region and even district to district. The suitable season for growing this crop is June to October. The duration of the crop is 90 -110 days. The variety is well adopted to well drain deep soil for its growth.  It is mainly used for table purpose. The variety is preferred more by Kanyakumari people as it is a traditional part of their daily food. Little leaf disease is a major problem caused by Mycoplasma like organisms but the variety is resistance to this disease. First harvest starts from 55-60 days after transplanting. The fruit is cylindrical in shape. Harvesting can be done by once in 5 days. Yield ranges between 20-25 tones/ha.
