Soil and water testing

  1. What is depth at which the soil samples should be collected for testing?
    The soil samples should be collected from 0-15 cm for paddy, Ragi, cumbu, groundnut, 0-22.5cm for cotton, sugarcane, chilli, banana, tapioca, 0-30,60,90 cm for fruit crops for soil nutrient analysis.
  2. How to collect soil samples for testing?
    The soil samples should be collected from the field by moving in a zigzag manner.  The soil sampling area surface should be cleaned without distributing sampling depth.  In that area, dig ‘V’ shaped pit and collect the samples from two sides of the pit like wise all sample should be collected.
  3. How many places to be selected for collection?
    From a uniform one acre field of land, 5-10 sub samples can be collected in a zig zag manner and can be made into a sample of 1/2kg by quartering method.
  4. What is quartering method?
    The soil collected is emptied on a clean milk steel of paper and evenly spread with a sampling knife.  The soil is them heaped into a cone by raising the four end of the paper.  It is again mixed well and evenly spread on the paper.  Now, it is divided into four equal quarters and small quantity of soil is taken from various prints in each quarter to get a represented line sample for the analysis.
  5. What is the time of collection of soil sample?
    Fields used for crop production are best sampled at any time after harvest and usually 3-6 months before planting.  Do not sample immediately after fertilizer has been applied.
  6. What are the implements used for collection?
    Soil sugars, spades, crowbar, plastic bucket etc.
  7. Where the soil sample is to be dried?
    The soil should be dried in shade but not in sunlight.
  8. What are all the information should keep inside the sample bag?
    Information sheet contains farmers name, address, field no with name, irrigation, crop, variety season, field problem etc.
  9. How to collect water sample from bore well?
    Run the bore well for 10-15 minutes and collect the water into a well cleaned bottle and bring to the labors.
  10. What is the time of application of fertilizers to the soil?
    The fertilizers are generally applied when sufficient moisture is present in the soil. 
  11. Any simple techniques (or) tools available to know the organic carbon content in soil?
    Yes, it is available organic test kit  is used to measure the organic content is soil. It is very simple method we can get the result immediately after 2-3 days. The cost of kit also very low.
  12. Irrigation water quality analysis
    The importance of quality of irrigation water was advised and impact of various water quality parameters viz., PH, EC,SAR,RSC on the coil and crop were illustrated.
