Forage Crops :: Chopping
CHOPPING

  • Length of the cut sections affects the packing and the quality of the silage.
  • Chopping forage crops into 1 to 2 cm length is ideal.
  • Grass silages require to be more finely chopped than maize or Sorghum.
  • Wilted and dry forages and forage with hollow stems should be chopped more finely than forage of high moisture content, thus permitting more thorough packing and eliminating most air pockets
