Sesame - Harvesting

Maturity symptoms

  • 25% percent of bottom leaves shed, top leaves and stem turn yellow
  • Capsules turn yellow upto the middle portion
  • Assess seed colour of the variety in  10th capsule from bottom

Harvest

  • Harvest before the bottom capsules turn brown
  • Pull out / cut the plant stalk and stack in the threshing yard on circle shape with the stem portion pointing out and the top portion pointing inside
  • To hasten the seed maturity, cover the entire stack arrangement with straw and leave it for curing (3-5 days)
  • After 5th day shake the plants and mature seeds fall
  • Clean the seeds and allow for 3 days for sun drying
  • Collect and store the seeds in gunny bags
