Improving the sustainability of goat farming community through improved (Goat)

Background :
            Thiru. M. Prabhu of Vadugampalayam Pudhur, Namakkal district has 5 acres of wetland and cultivating sugarcane and paddy crops. In addition he was rearing Non descript goats under extensive system.

Interventions :
            Selection of improved germplasm to local conditions and selection of individual animals based on phenotype, slatted floor housing, balanced feeding importance of fodder crops are proposed as interventions for better returns.

 Process :
            Training programme was organized and knowledge and skills were transferred to the end users. The farmers in turn adopted the recommendation.

Technology :
            Improved germplasm, Slatted floor housing, preparation of concentrates and cultivation of fodder crops (CoFS - 29).

Impact :
            By adopting above mentioned technologies he earned Rs. 600/- as additional income per goat.

Horizontal spread:
            After visualizing the returns of farms the local farming community has approached this KVK for training. The interested farmers of this village have been mobilized into groups and training were given. The farmers now step by step adopting improved practices.

Employment generation: It has generated employment for rural youth and women.
