Symptoms of damage
- Grub burrows into the stem near the soil surface.
- Wilting of plants in patches.
- Dead plants, come easily when pulled up
Identification of the pest
Eggs: Laid on the stem.
Grub: Globular head and elongated, dorso-ventrally flattened body without legs.
Pupa: pupates in stem.
Adult: Dark shiny beetle, 10 mm long and 3 mm wide.
Management
- Deep summer ploughing to exose the pupae to sun light and predation by birds.
- Use well decomposed organic manure.
- Destroy infested plant stems
- Apply malathion 1.5 DP 10 kg/ac in endemic areas
