Gram pod borer: Helicoverpa armigera
Symptoms of damage
- Larvae feed on leaves, flowers and buds.
Identification of the pest
- Eggs: Creamy white, spherical eggs laid singly on plant.
- Larva: Colour varies from pale greenish to brown coloured with dark brown dorsal and lateral stripes and hairs on the body.
- Pupa: Pupation in soil, leaf and crop debris.
- Adult: Stout moth, pale brownish yellow coloured body with ‘V’ shaped speck on forewings and dull black border on the hindwings.
Management:
- Follow summer ploughing to expose pupae to sunlight and bird.
- Install pheromone traps @ 5 nos./ac to monitor and kill the male moths.
- Set up light trap @ 1 / ha to attract and kill the moths.
- Spray HaNPV @ 100 LE/ac or B.t (Bacillus thuringiensis) @ 400 kg/ac to manage early instar larvae.
- Spray any one of the following insecticide
- Azadirachtin 1 EC (10000 ppm) 400 ml/ ac
- Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 60 ml/ac
