Benefits of B.t crops
- Bt crop get insect resistance throughout the season
- Reduce the number of chemical pesticide spray thereby reduce the cost and time for pest management
- Reduce the pest attack thus reduce the yield loss due to pest.
- B.t is harmful to only target pest and not harmful to beneficial insect
- Avoid individual to expose or contact with chemical pesticide
- B.t protein is quickly degraded in the soil accordingly pollution of soil and ground water prevented
- Food produce free from residue of chemical pesticide
- Pollution of soil, water and air is reduced due to reduction in application of chemical pesticide
Consequence of B.t crop cultivation
Insect will develop resistance against B.t when continuous exposure to B.t crop. To avoid resistance development it is necessary to raise 20% non B.t crops along with B.t crops. The offspring between the B.t resistance and non resistance insects will be susceptible to B.t because resistance to B.t is governed by recessive gene. So raising 20% refuge crop it is possible to delay the insect resistance to B.t. |
