Hawk moth or Dead head moth (Sphinx caterpillar): Acherontia styx


Symptoms of damage:

  • Defoliation of plants.

Identification of Insect Pest

Larva :Stout, sturdy, greenish with oblique stripes with a prominent dorsal curved anal horn.


Adult

  • Brownish giant hawk moth.
  • Thorax with a characteristic skull marking.
  • Abdomen has violet and yellow band.
  • Forewings are dark brown and hind wings are yellowish with 2 black lines.

Management:

  • Deep ploughing exposes the pupae for predation to insectivorous birds.
  • Collection and destruction of caterpillars.
  • Spray NSKE 5% or Quinalphos 25 EC 480 ml/ac
