Package practices for Turmeric cultivation

  • BSR1 — originated from Orissa which is disease resistant and high yielding   
  • Erode — originated from erode rhizomes are small and thin low yielding.
  • Salem — originated from Salem rhizomes are big and good yielding.
  • So he choosed BSR1 in his cultivation.

Crop Management - Land preparation

Soil pH 6-7 is suitable for turmeric cultivation it grows well in red loamy soils. The field is well ploughed to fine tilth. Super phosphate, potash and Terra Care are applied as basal in the final plough. Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria each of 10 kg mixed with 100 kg of farmyard manure and applied on the raised bed along with Neem cake 80 kg, Ferrous sulphate 12 kg and Copper sulphate 6 kg. The raised bed is formed by four feet width and one feet height. The 16 mm inline laterals are kept in the middle of the raised bed.

For one acre of land 800 kg of rhizomes are required for planting. Mix 4 kg each of Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria, soak the turmeric rhizomes in this mixture for two hours before planting. Irrigate the bed 12 hours prior to planting, the rhizomes are planted in 3 rows in the distance of 60 x 45 x 15 cm and 4 cm in depth. From planting to harvest the crop needs 100- 60-120 kg NPK. Fertigation to be done in alternate days to get maximum yield. It is always better to do partial earthing up in 30, 70 and 100th day to control weeds. Spray 150 g Ferrous sulphate, zinc 150 g, boron 150 g and urea 150 g mix in 250 litres of water and spray once in a month up to 3 months. Once the plant is attained 4 months and well-grown weeds will be automatically controlled due to shade. After 9th month the leaves are tend to dry and lounge. This shows that crop is ready for harvest. Minimum of 4.5 tons dried turmeric yield is achieved. Irrigation should be done as and when needed depending upon the moisture of the soil. The water should not be stagnated in the field.

Pest and Diseases

The symptom of rhizome rot is the plant will start drying from the tip to down the root. Yellowing of leaf edges and burning appearance is the common symptom of turmeric. Turmeric rhizome should be soaked in Metaloxyl 2% for 30 minutes before planting.

Turmeric Leaf Spot

Initially small yellow spots will be seen later it turns to big round spots and leaves starts lounging. Spray Carbendazim and Mancoceb @ 2% with adjuvant to control leaf spot.
