PEST MANAGEMENT IN FOREST NURSERIES
MINOR PESTS
GRASSHOPPERS
These are polyphagous pests. They feed on the young shoots and leaves in nurseries. The adults lay the eggs in soil and the nymphs come out from the soil to feed on the foliage. As the nymphs grow, they feed foliage more voraciously, as a result the seedlings die. Important species feeding on nursery seedlings are, Atractomorpha cremulaita, Aularches miliares, Orthacris simulans and Chrotogonus rolertsonii.
CONTROL MEASURES
1.Regular weeding in and around the nursery helps to reduce the incidence of grasshoppers.
2.Spraying of Phosalone 35 EC @ 2ml/lit. can kill most of the young and adults grasshoppers.
