Forest Type

Barringtonia, Acacia nilotica and Bamboos support birds to build their nests.

Animal Found

First bird arrive at Vedanthangal is Openbilled storks and breed twice during the same season before leaving the sanctuary. Important birds visiting this sanctuary is Painted stork, Eurasian spoonbill, Asian openbill, Black-headed ibis, Grey heron, Purple heron, Great egret, Spot-billed pelicans, Great cormorant, Indian cormorant.Raptors includes Black winged kite, Short-toed eagle, Pariah kite, Brahminy kite, etc.., Vedanthangal is the oldest water bird sanctuary in the country.

Best season

The nesting season commences late in October and the birds are through with breeding and disperse to their feeding grounds about February. The best season is October to January.
