Production and Supply of Foundation Seeds by TNAU to Increase Pulse Production in Tamil Nadu
Introduction
Considering the increasing demand for certified seeds among the farmers of Tamil Nadu, TNAU has programmed to expand the foundation seed production on a large scale in TNAU Research Stations to cover about 50% of the total quality seed requirement in Redgram, Blackgram, Greengram, Cowpea and Horsegram in Tamil Nadu.
Project Rationale
- To produce the entire quantity of foundation seeds required for the production of certified seeds to cover 50% of the total seed requirement in the pulse crops viz., redgram, blackgram, greengram, cowpea and horsegram.
Outcome of the project
- The total quantity of 6026 kgs of breeder seeds will be produced and utilized for producing 169.72 MT of foundation seeds and will be made available to the Department of Agriculture to undertake the certified seed production programme to meet out the state target.
Technical Programme
The entire quantity of foundation seeds required for producing 50% of the total requirement of certified seeds for Tamil Nadu will be taken up by TNAU for the pulse crops viz., redgram, blackgram, greengram, cowpea and horsegram and supplied to the Department of Agriculture for taking up certified seed production (Centre-wise area and quantity targeted under breeder and foundation seed production is given in Annexure I & II).
The foundation seed production programme of the respective centres will be executed by a technical team comprising one Professor, one Assistant Professor along with the Technical Assistant appointed under this project under the technical and administration guidance of the Special Officer (Seeds) with the Heads of different Research Stations of the University. (Centre-wise man power requirement is given in Annexure III & the proposed organization set up is given in Annexure IV).
