            | Jack  Fruit There are two types of  Jack Fruit called ‘Parukkan pala’ and ‘Koolam pala’. The varieties are  differentiated by two major properties. The main difference between both of  these traditional varieties are the earlier one is used for both consumption as  well as cooking purpose, whereas the later one is not fit for consumption but  the seeds only used for culinary purpose. Another difference is the method of  harvest, the Parukkan pala can be harvested only by using knife and fetches  more market prices whereas the koolam pala can be plucked by hands and doesn’t  fetch more prices. Apart from these differences, the cultivation procedures are  similar.
 
 Normally, it starts  flowering during February-March (Masi) and starts bearing during  August-September (Aavani season). Mostly it is affected by pest especially a  pest called ‘Nurai Poochi’ which makes the fruit watery and water droplets  drops from the leaves and seems as raining. In each tree on an average bearing  100 fruits and each fruit contain nearly 75-150 flakes (based on the size). If  the flakes size is bigger than the number of flakes is less and vice-versa. The  cost of each fruits is around Rs.10-20
