| Poyyur  Kathari – Local Brinjal VarietyThis local variety  brinjal variety is commonly cultivated in coastal villages of Nagapattinam  district. Thiru Sengutuvan of Vellapallam inNagapattinam district cultivates  this ‘Poyyur Kathari’ for about 10-15 years and still continues to cultivated  the same. This traditional variety is suitable to sow during June –July. It is  a transplanted crop for which a nursery is prepared with raised bed. Seeds are  sown on these raised bed and 15 days after sowing, the seedlings are  transplanted to the main field. While transplanting two seedlings are planted  per hill. 45 days after sowing, it starts bearing. Once it starts bearing,  brinjals are harvested normally by just plucking. Harvesting is done in a  phased manner to have the yield through out the season.

                  The       fruits are consistent which gives more weight when compared to other       varieties.
                  For       upto 6 months, this crop can be rationed and maintained till optimum yield       is obtained. |
