Methods of Coffee Preparation

Brewing

  • First Method : Water passes only once through the coffee grounds. Contains more soluble components.

  • Second Method : Water is repeatedly recycled through beans. Brew will have less soluble components and bitter taste.

Percolator Method

  • Continuously cycling the boiling water for the process of brewing.

  • May recirculate already brewed coffee through the beans.

Filter Method

  • It can be a manual or an electric drip coffee maker.

  • In either case, hot water drips through a basket that has ground coffee beans and then drips down to a pot below.

Steeping

  • Conceptually, steeping is the simplest way to make coffee.

  • Just mix hot water (almost boiling) with ground coffee, allow the two to mix together, and separate the brew from the spent coffee grounds.

Drip Brew

  • Coffee grounds are placed in a compartment (typically lined with a paper filter), then water is warmed to a near-boiling temperature via heating elements in the machine and dripped over the grounds, quickly brewing them.

  • Standard drip brewing requires a fine ground; the finer the ground, the more surface area there is for caffeine, antioxidants, and oils to seep from.

Vaccum Pot

  • A Vacuum brewer constructed of two chambers: One at the top, the other with a tube in the centre. Water is placed in the pot, the coffee grounds are placed in the bowl on top, and the whole apparatus is set over a burner.

  • As the water heats, it is forced by vapour pressure up the tube and into the chamber where it mixes with the ground coffee. The water vapour in the pot cools and contracts, creating a partial vacuum and the coffee flows down through the filter.
