Quality seed production in groundnut

Land requirement

  • Land should be free of volunteer plants. The previous crop should not be other varieties of the same crop. It can be the same variety if it is certified as per the procedures of certification agency

Field Standards

A. General Requirements

Pre sowing seed management

  • In dormant cultivars, break the seed dormancy by soaking the seeds in equal volume of 200 ppm ethrel for 1 h
  • Harden the groundnut seeds by soaking the seeds in 0.5 % CaCl2 (50 % seed volume) for 6 h (OR)
  • Coat the seeds with TNAU Vidhai Amirtham @ 11 ml / kg of seeds.

Method of sowing

  • Dibble the seeds at 4 cm depth.

Fertilizer recommendation

  • Apply NPK @ 25:50:75 kg / ha as blanket.
  • Apply borax as basal application @ 10 kg / ha in boron deficient soils.
  • Apply gypsum @ 400 kg / ha at peg formation stage and earthing up may be done

Foliar application

  • Spray NAA@ 200 ppm at 60 days after sowing to arrest late formed flowers and to cinrease the seed yield in groundnut

Roguing

  • Rogue the fields from vegetative to reproductive stage, based on plant, leaf, flower, pod and seed characters. In addition to the off types, the pest and disease affected plants should be removed
Field Inspection
  • A minimum of two inspections shall be made from the time of flowering to harvesting.

Harvesting

  • Harvest the pods as and when the colour of the inner side of the shell turns black.

Drying

  • Stake the plants as the pods are exposed outside for easy drying of pods.
  • Dry the pods to 15 - 20 % moisture content under sun.

Pod verification

  • Practice pod verification based on varietal characters of pods before grading to removegenetically impure seeds

Decortication

  • Dry the pods to 16 per cent moisture content and decorticate either manually or
using hand operated decorticator with proper adjustment.
  • Dry the kernels to 7 to 8 per cent moisture
  • Removeall discoloured pods.

·Reject mechanically injured pods for seed purpose.

Pre-storage seed treatment

  • Treat the pods with carbendazim @ 2 g / kg

Storage

  • Store the pods with a kernel moisture content of 8 - 9 %.in gunny bag for short term storage (8 - 9 months)
  • Store the pods with a kernel moisture content of 6 - 8 % in polylined gunny bag for medium term storage (12-15 months).
  • Store the pods with a kernel moisture content less than 6 % in 700 gauge polythene bag for long term storage (more than 15months).
