Success Stories ::Agriculture - 2015

An indigenous practice was documented from Melaperunkarai, Paramakudi taluk, Ramanathapuram district. Coconut pieces are fried in coconut oil and the rat trap is waxed with fried coconut oil and the piece of fried coconut is kept inside the trap. Such traps are kept in the field @ 20/acre. The rats are attracted by the smell and got into the trap. The trap is to be once again waxed with coconut oil for reuse.

Farmers of Ramasamypatti, Kamuki taluk of Ramanathapuram district follows yet another indigenous practice to control rat problem. One kg of wheat flour, ¼ kg of white cement and ¼ kg of sugar are mixed along with the mixture, the dried fish powder is added and the mixture is kept in banana leaf at few places in the field. When the rats consume the mixture, they feel more thirsty and due to severe dryness, they die immediately. The farmers reported that while adopting the practice, we have to take care that the source of water is not available in nearby places, if the rat consume water immediately after consuming the mixture, the expected results may not be obtained.
