Other indigenous practices for rat management
Farmers of Thirupuvanputhur, Manamadurai taluk of Sivanganga district follow a practice to control rat menace in drip irrigated condition. Rats bite the drip laterals for want of water. Pots filled with water are buried in the field to divert the rats to drink water in the pots instead of biting laterals. After a time period, insecticide is mixed in the water. When the rats drink the water as habituated, they die immediately.

Farmers of  Melakonthai, Vikravandi taluk of Villupuram district follow a low cost practice to reduce the rat menace in sugarcane cultivation. They keep un-ripened papaya pieces in the field. Due to the smell, rats bite the hardy papaya pieces and run away from the field.
