Establishment
Cotton Research Station, Srivilliputtur was established in the year 1950 with the main objective of evolving good quality cotton varieties.The first long staple cottonMCU 2 was released from Cotton Research Station, Srivilliputtur during 1954 and this was a trend setter for the improvement of major long staple cotton varieties in India.Intensive research work under All India Coordinated Cotton Improvement Project (AICCIP) ICAR Sponsored scheme is carried out, since 1963. MCU 4 was released in 1967 and MCU 8 in 1974.During 1982, Cotton Research Station, Srivilliputtur was identified as a Lead Centre for Medium Staple Cotton and as a result, SVPR 1, SVPR 2 and SVPR 3 were released for the summer cotton area to tolerate the drought and the sucking pests of cotton.
In addition to the research activities on medium staple cotton, research on development of long staple cotton varieties with CIRCOT norms was commenced and as a result a high yielding long staple cotton variety SVPR 4 suitable for the summer irrigated / rice fallow tracts of Tamil Nadu was released from this station during 2009.
Mandate
- Development of high yielding cotton variety/hybrid for summer irrigated and rice fallow tracts of Tamil Nadu.
- Development of suitable management technologies for achieving higher cotton yield.
- Development and management strategy for stem weevil, leafhopper, bacterial blight and root rot of cotton.

Extension Activities
Monthly zonal workshop, regular pest and diseases surveillance, diagnostic field visits, solving field problems, conducting on farm trials, publications in dailies and magazines, conducting Krishi Melas, trainings and demonstrations in IPM and INM and All India Radio Progrmames.
