Symptom of Damage :

  • Caterpillar causes defoliation.
  • Larva feeds on leaf blades of rice.
  • Leaves are defoliated from the margin or tip irregularly.

Identification of pest :

              Scientific Name - Psalis Pennatula

  • Egg :
    Laid in batches on the leaves covered with yellow hairs.

  • Larva :
    The Caterpillar is yellow with red stripes and an orange head. Tuft of hairs are found all over, of which two in the anterior region and one in the posterior region are prominent.

  • Pupa :
    Pupation is in yellowish cocoon of hairs on the leaves.

  • Adult : Moth is light yellow with bipectinate antenna.

Management Strategies:

  • The eggs are parasitized by trichogrammatid wasps.

  • Chalcid wasp and two species of tachinid flies parasitize the larvae and a vespid wasp preys on the larvae.

  • Expose the eggs to be picked up by birds after ploughing and trim the bunds.

  • Meadow grasshoppers, ants, birds and toads feed on the caterpillar.
