Rainfall Insurance Scheme for Coffee Growers (RISC)

  1. Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd (AIC) introduces Rainfall Insurance Scheme for Coffee Growers (RISC), to provide insurance cover for possible losses in coffee yield arising out of rainfall risks.
  2. The risk covered is deficiency in rains during Blossom and Backing periods as well as excess rains during Monsoon Period (July and August in Karnataka).
  3. RISC provides insurance protection to the extent of Rs. 30,000/ha for Arabica and Rs. 20,000/ha for Robusta.
  4. Coffee Board is offering 50% premium subsidy subject to a maximum of Rs. 2,500 /ha for Arabica and Rs. 2,000/ha for Robusta, to small growers (having 10 ha or less under coffee plantation). Other coffee growers can also avail insurance coverage under RISC.
  5. Insurance against monsoon showers can be purchased up to 30th June 2007, from the authorized representatives of AIC, who can be contacted at Coffee Board’s Zonal Offices.
  6. RISC provides insurance against excess rainfall and assures insurance payout in the event of a minimum of 35mm of rainfall per day for more than 7 consecutive days during July & August 2007, as per the following triggers:

Rs. 6000

  1. The premium amount varies from zone to zone. The table showing zone – wise premium payable by the growers and the corresponding Reference Rain – Gauge Stations in Karnataka may be referred to.
  2. Coffee Rainfall Insurance claims will be automated based on actual rainfall data received by AIC from the designated Reference Rain – Gauge Stations. The insured growers need not prove the losses or submit any claim documents. Claims under Coffee Rainfall Insurance will be paid within 45 days from the end of the insurance period.
