The Agricultural Graduate Student Conference (AGSC), first of its kind in India, is a two day event, will be held in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on May 13 & 14, 2015. TNAU-AGSC 2015 will be one of the leading student conferences in the agricultural sciences. This conference revolves around the theme "Impact of climate risks on Agricultural and Horticultural productivity"
Coimbatore also known as Kovai is the second largest city and urban agglomeration in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, after Chennai. It is one of the fastest growing tier-II cities in India and a major textile, industrial, commercial, educational, information technology, healthcare and manufacturing hub of Tamil Nadu. The city is located on the banks of the Noyyal River surrounded by the Western Ghats. Coimbatore has a pleasant, salubrious climate due to its proximity to thickly forested mountain ranges and the cool breeze blowing through the Palghat gap which makes the consistently hot temperatures pleasant. The climate is comfortable round the year, so it is called Poor Man's Ooty. The rich black soil of the region has contributed to Coimbatore's flourishing agricultural industry and, it is in fact, the successful growth of cotton has served as a foundation for the establishment of its famous textile industry. Hence, Coimbatore is referred popularly as "Manchester of South India" and "Detroit of the South". Coimbatore has been ranked 4th among Indian cities in investment climate by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). The city houses research institutes like Central Institute for Cotton Research, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Institute for Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education and Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University rated as the best Agricultural University in India by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi as a center of excellence for higher education in Agricultural and allied subjects. The TNAU had begun as an Agricultural School at Saidapet in Chennai in 1876 and proliferated as a college in Coimbatore, during 1906 and later ascribed as University. Till 1946, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural College and Research Institute was the only institute for agricultural education for the whole of South India. In 1958, it was recognized as a Postgraduate Centre offering Masters and Doctoral degrees.
The curriculum of the university is tailored to meet out the needs of the clientele who are engaged in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Processing, Agricultural Marketing; Agro based industries and Home Science as well as future agriculture development and research. University has high reputation in international forum, which are evident by a number of MoU signed with foreign universities like Nova - Scotia Agricultural College, Canada, Cornell University, USA and McGill University, Canada.
